Deepavali, The Spiritual Significance of Light
Why do we celebrate the Festival of Lights

The lights are being lit!
Today is the third and most auspicious day of Deepavali, the Lakshmi Puja. Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and well-being is worshipped this evening at the auspicious time decided by astrological calculations known as ‘muhurta’. Today Ma Lakshmy is supposed to visit the homes of her devotees and bless them!
‘Deepavali ’ is a Sanskrit word.
A combination of ‘ Deepam’ (light) and ‘Avali’ means rows. On Deepavali rows and rows of lights are lit to ward off darkness, a symbolic representation of the victory of light over darkness. People are rejoicing bursting firecrackers and sparklers. Tables are laden with Diwali ‘Faral ’. ‘Faral’ is an assorted combination of traditional delicacies.
